Acknowledged to be one of the greenest materials around, the eco movement has put bamboo in the spotlight once again.
Leave it to the world of design to make the old new again.
In this environmentally enlightened age, designers are reexamining materials based on their impact on nature. A result of that approach? The humble bamboo has become one of design’s hottest new stars, enjoying a resurgence that takes in everything from a pair of chopsticks to innovative flooring to the structure of an entire building.
We are now asking questions about material that have not been raised the past. We ask whether it comes from a renewable source, if the cultivation method is sustainable. We find out how much energy is consumed in the process. The dialogue may stretch further into economics and politics.

Q: Were you able to accomplish all your objectives, for the Cebu X Promotions Committee?
A: The important thing was that we were able to meet exhibitors from other countries who are potential buyers of Philippine furniture that's made in Cebu. Most of the prospects know Cebu and like what we have to offer, but have not been updated with the current changes in product mix, capabilities and material applications. I wouldn't say I've accomplished all my objectives, but I believe I've made major steps in being able to redirect their focus and consider visiting Cebu X in 2008, renew sourcing relationships, see new products.
Q: As a businessman, has it given you insights on how Cebu furniture exporters can further enhance their presence in the Dubai market?

Industry Experts Conduct Design Trend Seminar
As an added attraction to Cebu X 2007, design trend seminars were conducted by respected international industry expert. The seminars were to open to Cebu X exhibitors, CFIF members companies, the academe and other interested individuals.
Susanne Lengyel, an industrial designer and president of the German Association of Industrial Designers (VDID), conducted the "product Competence through Design" seminar last February 28. Among the topics discussed by Ms. Lengyel were the creation of sustainable design – what is possible and why we have to think different. Ms. Lengyel also shared her expertise in industrial designing – from concepts to realization. The 73 seminars audience was a mix of students, designers, company top management and international buyers.
