Must-See Event
The Philippine manufacturers have a long experience with the
American market but few companies have been able so far to penetrate
the relatively new European market. This is the target for the
future and a challenge to face. And it's one of the reasons I cannot
celebrate my birthday properly anymore. My Philippine employer, the
CFIF, is a private, non-profit organization composed of 163 of the
largest and most successful furniture exporting and manufacturing
firms in Cebu. CFIF serves as the primary support organization of
the Cebu furniture industry and one of our most ambitious and
successful projects is the organization of the Cebu Exhibition and
making this show a "must-see" event in Asia.
The show is considered the most cost-effective marketing tool for
furniture and furnishings producers in Cebu and neighboring regions.
But the constant flow of foreign buyers and guests is not a given;
it is the result of a through marketing campaign. We aggressively
promote the exhibition throughout the year through print
advertisements, on-line promotions and some 30,000 invitations
directly mailed to furniture buying corporations all over the world.
My colleagues and I travel every year to various furniture shows in
Italy, France, Germany, UK, and the US to spread the news about the
"Design Destination in Asia." Last year, I conducted a German course
in our office in preparation for the Cologne Show and this year we
tried French for the Salon du Meuble in Paris. Our office becomes
more and more multilingual so I don't have to wonder that my Cebuano
does not make any progress.
Although still a far cry from Milan, with its reputation of being
the design capital of Europe, Cebu wants to become the Design
Destination of Asia. Cebu has very good potentials since its
furniture industry is a major player, accounting for 58 percent of
Philippine furniture exports in 2000. Another advantage is the city
itself: the high concentration of more than 300 manufacturers just
around the corner of the show makes it easy and convenient for the
buyers to tour around town to visit various showrooms and factories
-- everything is just a hop away.
